School Library News

New Hours!

The library is now open every Monday and Tuesday afternoon 3:45-4:45. This is a great opportunity to choose books for your reading enjoyment. It is also a good time to sit and read with your child to show them the joy of reading.

Fletcher Schools Awarded Reading Patio Grant from Lowe's

Fletcher Public Schools has been selected to receive a 2011-2012 Lowe's Toolbox for Education grant from the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation (LCEF). Toolbox for Education grants are reserved for approved school improvement projects that can be completed within one year of the grant receipt. The Fletcher grant, valued at $3250, is for a Reading Patio located just outside of the school library.

Debbie Arthur, Fletcher Public Schools' Library Media Specialist, wrote the grant to convert a plain patio into an inviting area for parents and students to visit together. There will be books and magazines available for shared reading. Mrs. Arthur states that comfortable seating with landscaped shrubbery and flowers will be installed in the Reading Patio area. Teachers can also use the area as an outdoor classroom to introduce lessons about nature, clouds, science experiments, or other activities focusing on the outdoors.

Funds from the grant award, as well as funds available from the district's Library Council, will be used to purchase patio tables, Capri seats, a bench, and flora and fauna to attract butterflies and other observable insects. Through a collaboration with the Fletcher FFA Chapter, Fletcher 4-H Club, Fletcher FCCLA Chapter, and the Fletcher Community Association, the project is expected to be completed in late spring.

Fletcher Public Schools is excited about the opportunity provided by Lowe's. With funding for public education being decreased annually, school districts are looking for school improvement monies from local and national businesses and organizations. Lowe's recognizes that they are well-placed in communities to help create learning opportunities for future customers! Thank you, Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation for the Fletcher Public Schools' Reading Patio!
